MEETING WITH PIERRE-JEAN CHABERT, ANIMAL SCULPTOR

Chassons.com magazine :
Pierre-Jean Chabert, you are an animal sculptor and you took part in the last exhibition of animal artists in Brussels. When and how did you become passionate about sculpture?

Pierre-Jean Chabert :
At the age of five, my parents enrolled me in a modeling and turning course where I made dozens of ashtrays and enamelled bowls that they conscientiously stored in the cellar. What courage! Then, at sixteen or seventeen, I bought my first loaves of clay to make chimera heads. At twenty-five, thanks to the internet, I discovered the world of figurines and miniatures and began to create characters from fantasy worlds. Finally, freedom. At thirty, I took evening classes as a live model and learned to observe and sketch clay models. In 2011, at thirty-three, I left my job in finance and created my first exhibition entitled: "Animals and Men" in a Parisian loft. Now, as for why sculpture, I have no idea!

Chassons.com magazine :
What types of sculptures do you make, with what materials and, above all, what techniques do you use?

Pierre-Jean Chabert :
I mainly produce animal sculpture, (well, I should say animal modelling), or even animal portraits, and the work is always on clay. The work is always done in clay, which allows great freedom and freshness even though most of my work is cast in bronze.

Chassons.com magazine :
Why do you like the world of nature so much and why African nature?

Pierre-Jean Chabert :
Animals are simple, so much more than we are. They go to the essential. They are pure and the subjects are inexhaustible. Africa is emblematic, it is exciting, it is an adventure, it is the part of fantasy that everyone carries deep inside. I have had the chance and the pleasure of travelling to the Central African Republic, South Africa, Senegal and Mali.

Chassons.com magazine :
Pierre-Jean, are you a hunter? If so, what kind of hunting methods do you practice?

Pierre-Jean Chabert :
I don't hunt except maybe a guinea fowl in the Central African Republic a few years ago. I am looking for a look, a pose, an attitude, I am looking for a dynamic, a sensation, I am looking for that snapshot, that fragment of life that ideally tells a story.

Chassons.com magazine :
What are your next appointments?

Pierre-Jean Chabert :
An exhibition in Geneva in November and some other exhibitions in France and Belgium. For the work, can be monumental, a big rhino head, a giraffe or crocodile, a big gorilla or a lion, can be a group of galloping horses, an orangutan on its branch, a falcon on the hunt, the future will tell.
